What is an MCP server?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT talk to other software. An MCP server is the adapter: install one for Meta Ads, HubSpot or Google Search Console and your assistant can read that data and, if you allow it, take actions there. No copy-pasting CSVs into a chat window.
Which MCP servers should a marketer install first?
Start with the platform where you spend the most time pulling reports. For most teams that is Google Analytics, Google Search Console or Meta Ads. Add your CRM (HubSpot, Salesforce) next, then your CMS if you publish a lot. Three well-chosen servers beat fifteen you never use.
Official or community MCP server: which one should I use?
Use the official server when the vendor ships one. Meta, Google, HubSpot, Shopify and Semrush all do now. It's maintained, it uses proper OAuth and it won't break when the API changes. Community servers still win when you need a feature the official one skips, or when there's no official option. Every MCP page here tells you which is which.
Can an MCP server spend money or change my campaigns?
Some can. Ads MCPs with write access can create campaigns, change budgets and pause ads. Start with read-only permissions, check what tools the server exposes, and keep your AI client set to ask before running actions. Treat it like giving a junior media buyer access to the account.
What are Claude skills and how are they different from MCPs?
An MCP server gives Claude access to a tool. A skill tells Claude how to do a job: your SEO audit checklist, your brand voice rules, your ad copy framework. You usually want both. The MCP pulls the data, the skill decides what to do with it.
Do I need to code to use MCP servers?
Not anymore. Most official servers are remote: you paste a URL into Claude or ChatGPT connector settings and log in. Local servers need a JSON config file and Node or Python installed. Our setup guides include the exact config for each one.
